Ready, set, grow

As the new cropping season is about to get underway, our technical manager Stuart Sutherland gives a quick insight into Newton, and why it could be your perfect tool to get crops up and away fast. Watch the video below to hear what Stuart has to say.

The best possible start

Newton biostimulant seed treatment is increasingly being adopted by farmers due to the recognition of its proven abilities to enhance plant growth, productivity, and resilience. Newton’s potential to improve crop establishment, work in harmony with soil biology, and put plants in the best possible position to acquire moisture and nutrients throughout its lifetime – so they are less reliant on synthetic inputs – has contributed to its increasing use. Below you can hear from some of our Newton customers about their growing objectives, and why they are using Newton to help achieve the best possible start.

David Fuller-Shapcott is seeking to secure sustainability with help from Newton

Farming 369ha in the Scottish Borders near Roxburghshire, David Fuller-Shapcott has spent the past few years looking at how to refine and improve his business.

A move to biological seed treatments has helped David move away from chemical alternatives in a bid to help secure long-term business sustainability and improve soil health. This is where biostimulants have proved to be a good alternative option, with David particularly finding success from using Newton.

“With my YEN hat on, it’s very clear that we need to be enhancing rooting to maximise output – rooting is imperative to both water and nutrient capture – and as a treatment, Newton ticks that box well. Using it means my nitrogen use efficiency has improved because rooting and water capture has got better. Therefore I’ve not been suffering in these dry springs we’ve been having recently.”

Gerry Mee believes no-till systems benefit from Newton’s kick-start

Gerry Mee farms 220ha of arable cropping in Shropshire, rotating between winter wheat, oilseed rape, spring oats, spring wheat and environmental schemes.

Having been no-till for five years in a quest to improve the farm’s soils, Gerry turned to biostimulants to reduce his reliance on single purpose dressings (SPD).

Gerry believes his no-till system benefits from the Newton kick-start because it helps the seed to germinate quickly as well as hunker down in the soil. “We took a spade to the trial plots in February and the root mass was considerably bigger in the wheat crop treated with Newton.”

Simon Bayliss in Shropshire is using Newton to help grow better crops

Simon Bayliss is the farm manager for Wincote Farms in Eccleshall, Staffordshire and is 8 years into his regenerative farming journey across 273 hectares that has seen soil and plant health go from strength to strength and yields averaging 11.5 tonnes to the hectare in a “normal” year.

With resilience front and centre of Simon’s ambition for self-sufficiency and a desire to do better by the environment, raising soil organic matter and establishing fit, well tillered plants quick out of the blocks has come sharp into focus in recent years. Not afraid to try something new, Simon has been using all-organic Newton to help crops emerge faster and put deeper roots down ahead of winter. Find out more here.

Matt Waldie in Fife has been using Newton to build resilience through its unbelievable rooting benefits

Forth generation arable farmer and climate hero Matt Waldie is farm manager at 4 Front Farming Co Ltd in Fife, Scotland. Farming across 4 farms from sea level up to 700 ft, Matt’s on the front line of climate change and utilising the benefits of Newton seed treatment as part of a regenerative farming approach to help secure winter wheat, winter oat and spring barley establishment under increasingly challenging growing conditions.
